Introduction

The time has come for me to put together a 'booklet' about the Hoganson family. I've tried to collect information on the descendants of Sæming and Lina, as well as a little on their ancestors in Norway. I keep looking for more information so I would be happy to receive any additional information such as obituaries, pictures, or birth, death and marriage dates and places, etc.

Included in this booklet are: pedigree charts, a family group sheet, and descendants charts printouts from my computer software program; photo copies of: maps, Lina and Sæming's baptismal records from a microfilm of the Norwegian church record, their passport record, some pages from the bygdeboka (history of Norwegian farms) and photographs.

You will notice on one of the bygdebok sheets (p. 89, II) Sæming's birth is listed. On another sheet (697) is Lina and her siblings. One of her brothers is Martin, and he and his family are found on another page (187). When we lived in Oslo, Norway January-May 1986, we met Sverre, his wife Kjellfrid, and his sister Kristine. They are the youngest children of Martin, lived in Øvre Rendal in a guest house which they no longer ran; the weekend we visited them, we had room #5, and Jené had #1.

On another sheet (188) is mentioned and pictured Lidvin and wife. Their daughter Aase and her husband were up there that weekend, too. We also visited them in their home in Oslo - he worked for Customs and his English was very good. It was such fun to meet these distant relatives. Kjellfrid was also interested in genealogy, and showed us the farmsteads that the various people lived on.

We also stopped at Lomnessjøen on our way and met Kaare Vardenær, a grandson of Oline, Lina's oldest sister. And we had met and visited Ottar Wardenær who lived in Oslo.

Sverre, Kjellfrid, Kristine and Ottar have all since died. I don't know about Kaare or his wife.

I keep in touch with Hilleborg Ødegaard, who is descended from Martin Hornseth's daughter, Marie. She and her sister took me out for lunch one day when we were in Oslo.

On the page which has the translation of the baptismal records, I have misplaced the Norwegian photocopy of item #3, the record of Sæming and Lina's leaving the church. Since I have the reel number from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I will be able to get it.

As of yet I have not written a prose account per se - you will have to read through the pages, and get what you can.

I would appreciate any additions, any corrections, any help from any of you.

HAARSET

i øvre Bygdes vestre Grænd ("Vestagræinna").

*  *  *  *  *

In the upper village western Grænd ("Vestagræinna"). Was divided in 1664 into southern and northern Haarset.

Haarset is mentioned for the first time in the Diocese book for 1574 as owed 1 Skin for Outer Rendalen's Annex church and in 1578 as Archbishop goods (1 skin). Farms used in 1613 by one Nils Olsen Haarset; Farm is then 1 Skin Crown goods (the former church property); its ancient Odel (1 Skin) is already in 1550-the years gone over to Berge ("southern"), where this Skin of Haarset in 1570 said that is owned by Odel by the late Arne Tollevsen whose son Tollev Arnesen came to Messelt from which he in 1593 mortgaged 1 Skin in Hornset and 1 Skin Berge (called 2 Hides in the "southern Berge") to Jon Olsen in Oslo for his Father Arne's old debt to this for 5 1/2 cubits English cloth into a dress.

Nils Olsen Haarset whose sister Liv Olsdatter had got married first to Hanestad with Erik Hanestad's brother, Ola Eriksen Hanestad and later to Berge with Lars Svendsen Berge, bailiff Svein Berge's brother, is seen to have a son, Ola Nilsen, who must be born about 1590, when he in 1613 tilbygdes 3 Skins in Otlaasen, belonging to the heirs of Hangard.

Bygdebok Pages

This bygdebok page shows Seming HAAGENSEN (b. 1856) as the son of Haagen Jensen (1832-1890). Haagen is listed as the son of Jens HAAGENSEN Ustu Berkset (b. 1798), who in 1835, married Maren Semingsdtr Rugsveen (b. 1807).

The following pages are from the Ytre Rendal bygdebok. It lists the family of Seming's wife, Lina Larsdtr Hornset. Her father was Lars Andersen Nordre Lomnesberget (b. 1816) and mother Maren Jensdatter (b. 1825). Maren was the daughter of Jens Hågensen Bergset and Aase Toresdtr from Nakhua, and was adopted by Ole Ingvaldsen Røe and his wife Gjertrud Oudensdtr.

Erik Iversen Vangen (b. 1640)

The Øvre Rendal farm history (Bull 1940) for Søndre Haarset documents Seming HOGANSON's paternal ancestors back six generations to an Erik Iversen Vangen born in 1640. Erik married Else HAAGENSDTR Haarset in 1669 and became the owner of the farm on the death of her father, Haagen Olsen Berge.

Their son, Haagen Eriksen Haarset, is the ancestor of my great grandmother Mina HOGANSON through three lines of descent as can be seen from the chart below.

Descendants chart for Haagen Eriksen Haarset (1670-1740). Image courtesy of Mark D. Williams.

Haagen Eriksen Haarset (1670-1740)

According to Bull (1940: 81-82), Haagen Eriksen Haarset was born in 1670, and in 1701 married Malen Simonsdtr Negard Nordset (1676-1755), daughter of the Chaplain Simon Pofelsen Negard Nordset (d. 1697).

They had six children: Erik (1701-1773), Else (1709-1769), Simon (1711-1799), Maren (1711-1774), Ola (1718-1765), and Jens (1719-1795). The paternal HOGANSON line descends through their youngest son, Jens. As seen from the chart above, there is also another line through the oldest son, Erik.

Haagen died in 1740. Unfortunately I was unable to find any parish records to corroborate this. There is  however, a record for the death in 1755 of his wife, Malen, age: 79 years.

Jens HAAGENSEN Haarset (1719-1796)

Jens HAAGENSEN Haarset was born in 1719. In 1758 he married Gjertrud Olsdtr Ustu Møm (Bull 1940: 82). This event is also recorded in the Rendal parish Ministerialbok, but it is difficult to make out the date. It appears to be the 5th of June and I notice that the date for the entry below theirs is 31 May.

Detail of SAH, Rendalen prestekontor, H/Ha/Haa/L0001: Ministerialbok nr. 1, 1733-1787, s. 193. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603350586

Bull mentions that "[d]e kom til Søndre Høye," since the Haarset farm was inherited by Jens' oldest brother, Erik. Søndre Høye had been owned by Gjertud's uncle, Lensmand (Sheriff) Jacob Jacobsen who died in 1742. It also succumbed to fire on "20 Jun 1759, except for the storehouse that still stood in 1918." The fire had been ignited by a fire on the Berkset farm the same day (172).

Jens and Gjertrud had the following children: Malen (b. 1760), Maren (born and died in 1762). I am missing page 173 that lists the rest of their children. Their son, Haagen (1765-1817) became the owner of parcel B of the Utstu Berkset farm (192).

Jens was 76 when he died on 23 Jan 1796. He was buried on the 30th.

The parish record for Gjertrud's death and burial is difficult to read, but it looks like she may have died on 12 Feb 1800 and was buried on 2 Mar.

Haagen Jensen Berkset (1765-1817)

Haagen Jensen Utstu Berkset was born at Søndre Høye in 1765. The Rendal parish records record his baptism.

The Rendal parish records show the date of Haagen and Maren's marriage as 28 Dec 1791.

Detail of SAH, Rendalen prestekontor, H/Ha/Haa/L0002: Ministerialbok nr. 2, 1788-1814, s. 30-31. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603360081

They had six children that lived into adulthood: Gjertrud (1790-1855), Sæming (1792-1857), Malen (b. 1795), Jens (b. 1798), Kirsti (b. 1801), and Haagen (b. 1804) (Bull 1940: 192).

Haagen's family appears in the 1801 Census for the Bergseth farm in the Rendal parish along with a servant, Kari Carlsdtr.

The Rendal parish Ministerialbok records Haagen's death on 22 Aug 1817 at the age of 52 and his burial on the 30th of August.

After his death his wife, Maren, lived another 38 years to the ripe old age of 89 and died on 26 May 1855. She was buried on the 1st of July.

Jens HAAGENSEN Berkset (b. 1798)

Jens HAAGENSEN Berkset was born on the Ustu Berkset farm in Rendal, Hedmark in 1798 (Bull, 89). The Rendal parish Ministerialbok contains the baptism record, but the exact date is difficult to tell.

Detail of SAH, Rendalen prestekontor, H/Ha/Haa/L0002: Ministerialbok nr. 2, 1788-1814, s. 230-231. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603360122

According to Bull (1940: 192), Jens had an illegitimate daughter, Maren (b. 1825), with Aase Thoresdtr Hornset. This Maren would eventually become Mina HOGANSON's maternal grandmother.

In 1835 Jens married his second cousin once removed, Maren Semingsdtr Rugsveen Haarset. Maren was baptized 18 Jan 1807.

The Rendal parish records confirm the date of his marriage to Maren as 27 April 1835. A few years later Jens became owner of the Rugsveen farm.

They had the following children: Brynhild (1830-1831), Haagen (1832-1890), Seming (b. 1833), Maren (1843-1935), Jens (1846-1847), and Brynhild (1850-1909) (Bull 1940: 89).

Jens, Maren, and their family are recorded in the 1865 Norway Census on Hårsetstuen with their son, Haagen (33), daughter Bryhild (16), and Haagen's son Seming (9), my 2x great grandfather.

Ancestry.com records Maren's death and burial as 3 Jan and 14 Jan 1884 respectively. Currently we have no record of Jens' death.

Haagen Jensen Haarset (1832-1890)

Haagen Jensen Haarset was born on 26 Nov 1832 and christened on 3 Feb 1833 according to the Rendal parish records.

Haagen had two illegitimate sons before marrying Anne Jonsdtr Ronningen Elvvaal. The first one was with Ragnhild Olsdtr and was named Seming (b. 1856). He was my 2x great grandfather. The second was with Eli Tollevsdtr Galten and named Jens (b. 1870) (Bull 1940: 89).

According to the Rendal parish Ministerialbok Haagen died on 8 Jun 1890 and was buried on the 17th of the same month.

Marriage: Seming and Lina HOGANSON (26 Apr 1880)

Though difficult to find due to their surnames being listed as Horset and Hornset, Ancestry.com had a record for Seming and Lina's marriage in their Minnesota Marriages Index.

Marriage record. Semming H. Horset and Lena L. Hornset (Des Moines, Jackson, MN: 26 Apr 1880). Image courtesy of Ancestry.com.

After leaving Norway on 12 Mar 1880 and traveling to America, they arrived in Jackson County, MN, and were married on 26 Apr. I have been unable to find any ship records as of yet.

Lina would have been about six months pregnant with their first child, who they would name Mina, my  great grandmother.

Seming and Lina's Family Bible

Below are pages from the family Bible of Seming and Lina HOGANSON. On the inside cover one can read the date 1880, so it is plausible that they may have received this as a wedding gift. The text reads as follows: "This book belongs to Seming Haagensen Haarset and Lina Larsdatter Hornset of Rendalen."

Seming and Lina HOGANSON's homestead was in the SE corner of Section 36. In 1887 they had 80 acres next to Lars O. Teigen. If we zoom in a little more one can see it better. Lars' future wife, Emma (Roe) Teigen was the sister of Albert Roe, who would eventually marry Seming and Lina's daughter, Mina.

It was difficult at first to find a record for this census until I expanded the search to include the surnames Horset, Haarset, and Horseth. It is interesting that Sam had gone by Hoganson in 1900 and 1905, only to switch to Horseth in 1910.
